Captain Marble or The Christmas Carol
Captain Marvel is amazing, and this smaller piece is only an attempt at capturing her badassery. Inspired by the ass-kicking dinosaur-punching cover art for Captain Marvel #1 by David Lopez and the great story-telling of kellysue. It will also be displayed at Fantastic Comics~!
Also, if anyone is serious about building that Captain Marvel chapel, let’s talk.
- 20 inches x 13 inches
- The buttons are marbles! She’s Captain Marble! I regret nothing.
- Since she is very primary-colory, choosing the background color/texture was very difficult and stressing. So I made it snow. I think my Russian blood is subconsciously influencing my aesthetic choices.
- Not clear in the picture, but the “rays” are silver whereas her outline/internal lines are patina’d black.
- About 74 separate pieces + 6 marbles
So this piece was birthed from the same twitter prompt that Doc Shaner used for his piece, and i wanted to follow suit. If i got to create a 7-person all-female Justice League team, this would be it. I like to think of them as a “blitz” team. hit them hard, hit them fast. no muss, no fuss. that top row coincidently are my favourite dc characters as well. This would also be my dream book if I ever worked for DC. the Zatanna design of course is taken from Jamal’s perfect (in my opinion) design for her.
This has nothing to do with me working for DC, nothing to do with me having worked in the bat-offices, this is just straight talk. This morning, I got to see an advance PDF of the upcoming GOTHAM ACADEMY by Becky Cloonan, Karl Kerschel and Brendan Fletcher.
Holy shit, I have not been this excited about a Gotham book in years. I am not even remotely exaggerating. This book is beautifully written and GORGEOUSLY drawn. Scott Snyder and I are just agog at the coloring alone, and that’s on top of the innovative and eye-melting art of Karl Kerschel.
The script is cute (without being that fake pixie stuff that is becoming the new female cliche) but also has heart and brains and a ton of imagination. This book is GREAT. I absolutely loved it. Take my recommendation for what it’s worth. I am writing a book for DC and all, but this has nothing to do with that. I barely know the creators involved. My only bias is for great books.
This is the kind of book that sticks in your heart and needs to be re-read and ogled over. Seriously, I can’t recommend it highly enough. Tell your retailer you WANT GOTHAM ACADEMY. You will thank me.
You know what? It is a really good time for awesome fantasy comics about warrior women. Here are some of the ones I’m loving:
- Rat Queens, by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch
- The Legend of Bold Riley, by Leia Weathington, Marco Aidala, Konstantin Pogorelov, Vanessa Gillings, Kelly McClellan, and Jason Thompson
- Red Sonja, by Gail Simone and Walter Geovanni
- Princeless, by Jeremy Whitley and M. Goodwin
- Princess Ugg, by Ted Naifeh
Do you have others you’re liking?
I recommend every single one of these!
